I started to thing about tight pants, after I looked at swagger's 2009 spring/summer line which is modeled by hip-hop artists Lupe Fiasco, The Cool Kids, Mickey Factz, DJ Mano and Hollywood Holt.

In Oh Snap!!'s song, 'Too Fat To Be A Hipster', he makes it clear that everyone isn't skinny enough to fit into skinny jeans. In the lyrics he says, "I'm too fat to be hipster, 'cause skinny jeans don't come in my size/ I wear baggy jeans because that's what comes in 42s/I like to dress fly, but fuck it I love food/All my big boned brothers do you know what I mean/The ladies don't like chunky asses running around in skinny jeans"

In Jay-Z's verse on the song 'Swagger Like Us ft. Kanye West, Jay-Z and Lil' Wayne', he says "Can't wear skinny jeans cause my knots don't fit/No one on the corner got a pocket like this/So I rock Roc jeans cause my knots so thick"

In the Kanye West's verse of 'Gifted ft. Kanye West, Santogold & Lykke Li' he says, "It seems like everyone dresses tight now, and I just want my credit"

In Mikey Rock's verse of the The Cool Kids song, 'Box of Rocks', he says, "Stop at the station he like why your pants tight/I'm like it doesn't matter because I sell out shows every damn night/they be like damn right".

Last year rapper Mazzi of S.O.U.L. Purpose dissed a lot of hip-hop artists in a lame attempt to get fame. In his song, 'Lesson A', he said, "The Cool Kids are wack/The Pack want their style back… Get the hell back on your bike and cycle on/With those tight-ass jeans/And probably even tighter thongs". I will admit that he made a valid point about the popularity of the keffiyeh and the fact that very few people know the history of their fashion accessory. However, Mazzi quickly contradicts himself and proves that attack raps, name drops and old school music references will not make up for a lack a lyrical talent. If all of Mazzi's statements were true, it would be impossible for anyone in their early twenties or younger to make a homage to old school hip-hop.

Here is another lame diss track. If people think tight clothes and 80s/90s hip-hop is a trend, then the tracks that diss these people are a trend that lacks originality and talent. Hip-hop is still alive and the lyrics and beats of old school revival artists show that they appreciate artists like Audio Two, Run DMC, Slick Rick, De La Soul, Digable Plants, EPMD, Mos Def, Q-Tip, Souls of Mischief, A Tribe Called Quest. These new artists also show that its good to appreciate other genres like indie and electro, because artists like Afrika Bambaataa crossed music styles in the 1980s.

Overall, it takes WAY more than a image to be a good MC. Musicians like Hollywood Holt, The Cool Kids, Ninjasonik, Million $ Mano, Kanye West, ect. happen to wear tight pants, but they have loads of talent that go along with it. Also, if your born a man, then your a man. If your sexually attracted to men, then your gay and that's the only time people should use that word. People shouldn't allow society to limit your individuality. The rawest MC can wear a v-neck, a cardigan and skinny jeans or a white t and baggy pants. Clothes don't affect talent. Dressing well doesn't make you a good artist or cool, because your potential is based on your knowledge and ability. A problem only arises when people wear certain clothes so they look cool, because life is more about being yourself than being authentic. Some people are destined for greatness and they can't live a satisfied life while being a clone of mainstream society, eventually groups of individuals will look alike to a certain extent, but at least they feel true to themselves.

But maybe I'm biased, because I love men, good hip-hop, classic hip-hop, fashion, tight pants, respect and intellect.

Its officially midweek which means its acceptable to start thinking about weekend plans. Last week I went to my favorite Friday hangout, Throwback at The Republic. This night no one opened up, it was just 80s and 90s throwbacks. And when I say only, I mean ONLY. My friends requested songs from Rye Rye and The Black Kids and they were not played, but whats the point of complaining, it was THROWBACK. lol The Force Feed Radio duo and Dj Yancy battled it out with great hits that allowed no time for a breather. I noticed a smaller turnout than other weeks, which might have resulted from a pilgrimage to Austin for SXSW or other places for colleges' spring break. But despite the smaller turnout I still had fun. I met a cool guy named Craig who showed me that it's true, its better to be in VIP than the crowd. However nothing beats the stage. Like always me and my crew hit the stage and acted like we were in the SXSW or any other major music festival. I saw leader of the SIKKIS crew Mena and the owner of Traffic, New Orleans' premier streetfashion boutique posted on the stage as well.

Last week's Throwback was fun, but the upcoming week will be amazing. Throwback will have bookoo performers take the stage so look out for G-Eazy, Trombone Shorty, Greg Banks, PL of the Slap Doctorz, Blair Taylor, Erika Flowers and Riva. A song isn't a song without the featuring artists performing with the main artist. FYI urbandictionary taught me that New Orleans slang word, bookoo, comes from the French word beaucoup, which means a lot. French, New Orleans slang, typical. Anyway, everyone come out to Throwback this Friday because anyone who misses it will be greatly disappointed. Throwback is just like a moshpit, you can never have too many people there.

I know I'm likely never going to see you again, oh out-of-town band member, but I wanted to put this out there. It was about 4:30am. You and your band were piling into a ubiquitous white van, talking about going back to the hotel. I was walking by and got distracted by y'all, and you (the driver) gave this ineptly charming spiel about how you hadn't been kissed during sxsw. A strange combination of your bandmates egging us on with a well harmonized chorus of 'oooh's, the remnants of too many tequila shots in my system, and that strange hour of the morning led to you getting a sxsw kiss (um, or two). You were very sweet about it, and wow that was a great kiss. Just wanted to say thanks for ending my sxsw on a high note, and that I hope it did the same for you. And hey, if you're planning on coming back to town any time soon, maybe we can try for a repeat?

Caught by surprised you smacked me with your purse. Bunch of tampons fell out as a result. Without missing a beat -- I picked them up trying to protect your honor. You gave me a nasty look and started to walk off. I tried to apologize some more... but you kept walking. I grabbed your arm... You spun around and kicked me in the nuts... I dropped like a sack of potatoes. A crowd had formed by now... despite my aching nuts -- I popped a boner. Please tell me your single!! Write me back...!

Pharrell apparently is a big fan of McDonalds. Watch him dance and sing the menu at a McDonalds in a Paris airport. The dude is in his late thirties, but you would never know from his behavior.

After seeing these videos, I'm positive that Ethan Lader is my new favorite music video director, but no one can beat So Me, who directed Justice's 'D.A.N.C.E.', Kid Cudi's 'Day n Nite' and Kanye West's 'Good Life'. This video features North Hollywood's Laze & Royal. The video has bright colors, a nice lyrical flow and cute twins which makes for a nice bonus.

Maybe I can have a photography career. I just found out that one of my pictures I took during my D.C. trip for Obama's Inauguration has been short-listed to be in Schmap Washington DC Guide for April 2009. I took it when I was visiting the Smithsonian's Natural Museum of African Art.

Behind every cool shirt there is a story and an talented artist who drew it. Recently the cool California brand, The Hundreds, started to tell the story behind their designs. I always wished 'The Hundreds' was a reference to Chicago's southside neighborhood, 'The Wild Hundreds', but something always reminds me that Chicago never had a big surf scene to inspire their clothing brand. Anyway, they created their “Monkeys” design obviously after See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil. However, they decided to make the monkeys represent bitter gossip, hate, and negativity. I think Kid Cudi should get a shirt.

The Hundreds shirt called "Salad Bowl" relates to the concept that American culture is like being in a salad bowl. What are you in this salad bowl of a life? A tomato? The lettuce? The mushrooms? Maybe the underrepresented carrots.
Steve Nazar, an artist known for his 1980s work with T&C Surf has designed the 'Welcome To The Jungle' shirt for The Hundreds. Steve created a set of characters that represents The Hundreds lifestyle. Meet Rhino Loco, Fatty the Bear, Captain Handsome, Way Jose, Skunk, and Riot the Hyena.

I really want a cool track bike, but i probably won't get a fixie, because truthfully I'm lazy and I will get tired of doing the extra peddling. But most importantly I want a bike with a brightly colored frame, white or colored aerospokes and other fixins. Maybe I'll get an oldschool colored tuff wheel from Ebay. They're history is really interesting, when they started to lose business with BMX people they went into the wheelchair market. lol

Wow, I don't know if I'm maturing or if I actually found quality R&B. I'm known for my tastes in hip-hop and rock music, but I think I might turn into a R&B fan after listening to New Orleans' very own Yuri. Well maybe its because he's not really R&B. Perhaps he's actually soulful-alternative-acoustic-hiphop-neosoul-experimental, like John Legend meets a male santogold meets kenna meets a male lauryn hill with a little New Orleans flavor. Personally I don't care what label the music industry gives him, I just think everyone should check him out before he becomes a big star.

If you looked for me last night, you would have found me at Republic for the best Friday party in New Orleans. Its started off with a concert/eco-friendly fashion show. IN Exchange ran the Ethical Fashion Show, and Soul Capital and Dee-1 (both who performed the previous night at Tulane's Lupe concert) brought in a hip-hop vibe while Tulane and Loyola students modeled their fair-trade clothing. Then the bluesy rock group, The Revivalists performed their own songs and covers. I was really vibing with the distinctive voice of Dave Shaw, who was wearing one of my favorite American Apparel shirts so that was a plus. The proceeds went to IN Exchange's work in the Tibetan Settlements in India. Also, Defend New Orleans sold their cool clothing and episodes of Captain Planet played in the background. After the fashion show was over, the stage quickly detached. From that point on there was nothing to be heard but but great 80's and 90's new wave, pop, rock, hip-hop, and new indie, electro and hip-hop over DJ Damion Yancy's danceable beats and record scratches. As a self proclaimed music enthusiast, I was really pleased to hear Justice's 'D.A.N.C.E.', Justice & Simian's 'We Are Your Friends', Kings of Leon's 'Sex On Fire', Kid Cudi's 'Day n Night' and electro bangers from Rye Rye, Daft Punk and M.I.A. Throwback is unquestionably the only place (I know of) in New Orleans that plays my favorite hip-hop, indie and electro music. Last night DJ Jive (one half of the the DJ duo Force Feed Radio) also touched a little vinyl and some of the Team Robot crew came out. I even made a request to hear a song by Uffie, which created a smirk on DJ Jive's face... I guess he was surprised to hear a request for an artist on the Ed Banger record label. I'm glad I'm part of New Orleans' music scene, i don't even care about how dirty my shoes got.

Earlier my crew and I strolled down to Handsome Willy's for the Friday Funk n CRAWFISH Crunk Super Jam. Everyone seemed like they were in grad school, but it was fun. They had free hotdogs and crawfish for $3. DJs Scoob and Justin Thomas played fun music and air smelled liked hot dogs, crawfish and Abita, which means it is offically springtime NOLA.

If you are not aware SXSW (South by Southwest) is currently going on in Austin, Texas. It is a music and film festival that takes place every year at this time. This year it will be from March 13th to March 22nd. Music of all genres will be performed on several stages and 108 films will be shown. Without a doubt I think this the only place where the best of djs, hip-hop, electro, rock and everything else comes together, but hey it's the live music capital of the world.
